    The special moments

I so get used to start my day from morning activity, that even during my recent tourist trip to Saint Petersburg I wasn’t able to give up on this. Usually my morning start from a visit to the sea, where I’m swimming or cycling by the bicycle path along the sea. While being in the trip, my day were started with walking. Certainly that it were walks along numerous rivers and canals of the city on the Neva. I was waking up before sunrise and while my friend and most inhabitants of the city still were sleeping I walked. The city doesn’t wake up early, at 7 and even at 8 am the streets were still not crowded and car noise aren’t so comprehensive and loud as during a day. Each day I chose different routs. I was walking along Griboyedov Canal, by embankments of rivers Moyka and Fontanka, sawing how the sun appears from behind the Winter Palace and above the dome of St. Isaac’s Cathedral, how the sun’s rays not yet visible illuminate by its special light the wall and the Cathedral of the Peter and Paul Fortress. Also I looked how cooled down over clear night air lays as frost on the Field of Mars, how getting cold the Neva and how fishes jumped out of the water to gulp air and how fisherman hook this fish... I saw a lot more. Someone who are able to contemplate, always see a lot. Morning landscapes are special. They are special also by that, almost noone aren’t try to see them. In mornings people usually in a hurry, they can’t value this special moments, they have no time to freeze in one’s tracks under the majestic sounds of ringing of the cathedral bells. Yes, I never cease to be convinced - morning is something special. Those my morning walkings around the waking city are my best memories of this trip.

The stone city on the Neva

Saint Petersburg was based in 1703 by tsar Peter I. During two hundreds years it was a capital of the Russian Imperial. The city was the cradle of all three Russian Revolutions and it fell along together with the last Russian emperor in 1918. Now it’s the second city in Russia - the North capital. The city from stone and water. It’s located on the coast of the Gulf of Finland, at the mouth of the Neva River. The city on the Neva built essentially in the swamps, which were drained through the construction of canals and ponds. The whole historical part of the city is made from stone. The shores of canals and rivers are encased into stone, along them there are granite embankments and also stone made houses, towering on the both sides of the streets. The historical part of the city on the Neva stands out its unity of the buildings and abundance of stucco. In 1714 by Peter I was issued a decree which prohibited a building from stone everywhere except new cultural city. A stone and bricklayers for long years became privilege of Saint Petersburg. Today the abundance of stone here is amazed. Really the city of stone and water, water inside stone frames. But trees, there are just a few of them on the streets! Without an abundance of green spaces the city streets which are already grey, became grey especially. From this side even our Kaliningrad is a real oasis. It’s nice to walk around this stone shores, historical buildings and famous bridges, here come to life the characters and places of the books I’ve recently read about the revolution. The city is steeped with history, interesting on a contrast, nice to visit, but not for life from my view, I prefer something more natural, more green, less crowd and more peaceful. I’m glad to return home, not rather Kaliningrad itself, but in my home, to my place near the green and the sea.

    A cultural journey

Recently my friend and I have visited the city on the Neva. Actually Saint Petersburg has more names than most other cities. You can call it Peter, the city of Petr, the cultural capital, the North capital and even SPb - all these names are widely used. Besides, there are two old names - Leningrad and Petrograd, which are also well known. In my opinion our journey came at the best time for this city - in the middle of October the city is bright even without so rare sun here and crowds of tourists are already much less. Nothing so suit for the cultural capital as coat and umbrella cane, also a thermos for walks through numerous parks and binoculars for going to the theater. Even though we chose the format of leisurely walks, for five days we walked around a lot and saw almost everything interesting. We went boating twice, saw how the bridges were raised, walked the main city dominants, went to the Mariinsky Theatre, visited the Hermitage museum and we walked around all the fountains of Peterhof, we were walking near the most expensive stadium in Russia and walking around some beautiful autumn parks. We walked not one hundred of kilometers in our suits, which aren’t so comfortable for such long walks. But in general it was good and I’m quite happy with this journey. Of course our umbrella cane was came in handy, but in general the North city gave us quite a good weather, especially in the last three days, when we even saw the sun! For the city, where on average are just 62 sunny days in a year, almost three sunny days in a row is a very good result. The last pleasant accord of the journey became the bright sun which met us in the airport in our own, also not very rich for the sun, region. So I still on time to catch the last days of our warm golden autumn.

    When the strong winds come

When the strong winds come, I can’t swim in the sea - the wave are too wild. But it is a good time for bicycle ridings. So I cycle a lot. It seems I can do it endlessly. Especially now, when the landscapes are changing before your eyes. The wind is the main ringleader of these changes. He drives the waves, noisily breaking them of the shore, he shakes the treetops and he also drops leaves from the trees, like they are parachutists - the first one went, the second, the third...and faster and faster fly off leaves-parachutists, twirling in the air and laying to the ground. I’m remembering my own jump with a parachut, oh how long ago it was. I was seventeen years old then. I’ve been wanting to repeat it for a long time... You are pedalling steadily, contemplating and the thoughts are also scrolling, flowing slowly. How pleasant, relaxing this time is. A break for a cup of tea or for a lunch, a stop to seat a bit by the roughing sea. Leisurely, with a pleasure pasts the time. I have a book with me, but usually I don’t have enough time to open it. The time are flying as fast as the wind drives me while we are on the one way. It’s already sunset is near. And so I’ve been cycling from sunrise to sunset, a hundred kilometres along the beautiful bicycle path strewn with a gold of leaves. It’s not enough. Tomorrow I’ll cycle again.

    Ah my dear...

It’s fascinating how suddenly the autumn flared up. Just a couple of days ago the summer colours outweighed and today they are already the autumn one. Bright and beautiful one. Trees flare up with colours almost before your eyes. So damp firewood smolders for a long time in the fire and then suddenly ignite, just at once. The same is with trees, it only seems for us that it happened at once, but there is still some preparation behind this. Each year it seems for me that golden autumn somewhere lost and I’m not tired to surprise how suddenly it comes. Every year in October I take photos of my garden, to see the progress, to compare with last years, to see the growth of my plants and just to look at these beautiful photos during long grey winter. I choose such time when it’s almost ready to break down into autumn, when the garden slowly started to undress, when autumn colours are the brightest in it. It isn’t a particular day, it’s a particular condition of my garden. I completely forgot about it, but just as I saw the garden today, I immediately understood that it is that day. Then I looked at the photos of last years and was so amazed when I saw that each year photos made on the 11-12 October. However, how constantly nature is! So constant as is my love to this place, which became more than just Home, it is something so close, so necessary to me. All here is dear to my heart - the location, the house, the garden, the sea, the air and my whole way of living. I’m in vain trying to ready for my week journey. I’m already miss, before even leave. Ah, my dear Place, my place is here ...

    Gorgeous drink

Winds didn’t keep us waiting for long. They have come and leaves quickly started to falling from trees, twirling and dancing in their death throes... In such magically sad period cacao drink supports me well, enveloping in warmth and comfort. This year I become a big specialist with this drink. Usually in my country people are cooking it from milk, by boiling in a saucepan. But milk is perishable product, you need constantly to buy it and besides after the cooking you need to wash a saucepan. All these is inconvenient. So I decided to simplifie this process. I started to pour cocoa powder (it must be alkalized cocoa powder) just with boiling water. The taste quality has deteriorated a bit. So I put in it a little of cream and beat with a blender. It turned out good. But there is also the problem, you still need constantly to buy cream, which is expensive and still perishable. So I stepped further more in the simplification. Instead of cream I put dry coconut cream. And here it is! It’s fast, delicious and convenient. I just put dry ingredients in a blender bowl (sometimes I put there also a spoon of peanut butter), pour with boiling water, make whoosh with blender and that’s all - the gorgeous drink with delicate foam is ready. Just bring your favourite porcelain cup and faster go to the balcony, while evening lighting is still on. The magic is started. You are in the darkness, only the garland on the big apple tree near the house is lit, the wind wiggles its light bulbs and sheds leaves, in you hands is the hot cup with chocolate drink and inside your heart are calmness and delightful...

    In the search of autumn

To the end of the first decade of October we still have very green landscapes. Even though we had a period with sunny days and frost nights (which is often leaded to bright autumn colours), the amount of rainfalls in the first part of September overpowered this fact. It turns out that the abundance of moisture allows to trees longer produce chlorophyll, which is responsible for green colours of leaves. I hope that in this case trees won’t follow the lead of alder trees, which never change the colours of leaves and shed them green. If the strong winds will come, they quite possibly help to trees to lose their leaves still being green. Strong winds in general are opponents of so loved by me golden autumn. Anyway for today we have very good - sunny and quite autumn day, which is persistently calling for a small trip with a name like ”In the footsteps of autumn” or ”In the search of autumn”. And while my friend Lol having some pleasant breakfast time with the sounds of alder’s falling leaves (green of course) and hubbub of hundreds of birds. Each October to my place are flicking many birds to feast on grapes. We have in close vicinity an abundant thickets of Isabella grapes, which is very attract birds. They are rustling with leaves, chirping and eating grapes. After having eaten fill they started to fly and ”fire” at us, so just hurry to hide. It’s better if they fertilize the soil rather than my head... Yes, the day are going to be wonderful! I wish you also have many such pleasant beautiful autumn days.

    First frosts

Here come the first frosts. Early this year. In the last one we got it only in November. The grass today has covered with white blanket of hoarfrost and crunches, and the roofs shine silver. The sea looks a big boiling cauldron over which seagulls circling low as if waiting for the fish will be cooked. Apparently they don’t know that the fish would rather go to warmer waters, the same as birds will flew away for better places. Now exactly the time of mass migration of birds. The cranes have flown away. The cormorants and geese with a load cackle are still flying in orderly rows somewhere above your head. Just me and the restless seagulls, will stay with our rapidly cooling Baltic. We will stay for the most depressing part of the year... Nights now are so cold, that I don’t so much feel like swimming in the morning as I usually do. So for the second time on this week I preferred to cycle instead. In autumn I especially often do it, as I like to see how the nature is changing, painted with autumn colours and gilds the paths. With such weather my poor feet often become the victims of my morning activities. So I decided to help them and bought for them a socks with heating. What won’t people come up with! It’s great actually. My feet fast quickly rehabilitated themselves yesterday after my swimming and today I cycled with much comfort. In this case my hands also would like to sound the alarm, but they can be heated easier, you just need to clench your fist or use your pockets, whereas feet, encased in boots, do not have such opportunity. So I still will think if my hands really need this strength of people’s resourcefulness. Stay warmth and comfort everywhere!

    Autumn has come

How fast, however, was the jump from warmth to coolness, from flip flops into warm boots, from summer to deep autumn. How fast, warm air mass flew away taking with itself our cloud shield, which saved nights from air cooling. If during the days it’s still warm under the sun rays, but just as the sun goes down, the temperature is rapidly falling down. To the morning we get not more than +3-5C, which is quite cool, especially near the sea. It’s a pain to see how my dear yet warm sea gives off, like a boiling cauldron, its heat to the cold morning air. It’s a pity not to see the rising sun during my morning swimming any more, as the sun now rising far on the east, behind the fence and hills of the presidential residence... It’s need a careful look to see autumn, its colours and rarely falling leaves, but still autumn has come. By the eyes you still see summer, but temperatures and short days, the low sun and freezing feet are saying about different. Autumn, however, has come. The time of hot food. The soup time has come. My favourite one in this period is pumpkin soup with green lentils and curry. Such as during summer I’m ready to eat only salad with tomatoes, such during autumn I’m ready to eat only this soup. However, there are many more other interesting dishes from pumpkins. I grow it in my garden, so we have some of it for food experiments. This year I made candied fruit from pumpkin, which was very delicious, although too wasteful in terms of both time and product yield. Most people in my country treat pumpkin with wary distrust and often wrinkle their noses, although rather they won’t even recognize the pumpkin in the finished dish. I like pumpkin, as I know that you need just to cook it right, besides, it’s bright and looks beautiful autumn like.
