Dear diary, Today was not an especially tiring day. In the morning, I worked online, as usual. I met my new students and it was a great pleasure. Our class lasted 4 hours. After the introduction of the course, I asked each student to introduce themselves and they all did. Their skills are quite homogeneous, but some students are better than others, of course. I had pasta with tomato sauce for lunch, then had a black coffee to keep myself active. After clearing the table, I washed the dishes and eventually swept and washed the floor. A harsh winter, such as we’ve got this year, is a real trial, especially for birds and animals. Most of them got used to soft winter, so some of birds have stopped flying away for winter. But when the snow has fallen it became difficult for most move and get food. A lot of energy they are spending for warming themselves, the days are short during the winter, so they have not so much time for getting food. So why it’s necessary to help them to pass through this hard period.This year this idea is especially being promoted in my region. Almost everywhere is writing about how you can help to birds and animals. The main information of course how to help with food. For birds everywhere are hanging birds feeders. In the National Park is also cared about animals, by making special canopies and hanging out bunches of feed. I also decided to care about my feathered friends. There are a lot of them near my country house. This winter I often see a blackbird, a fieldfare, a jay, a robin redbreast, a jenny wren, a magpie and a titmouse. They live just next to me, some even under my house and in my barn. They have never needed my help before, but now it’s difficult times for them. So at first I put on my big apple tree a piece of Iard, which was used especially by a jay and a titmouse. Then I made a bird feeder and put it also on that tree. Birds are very careful now. Even my most frequent visitor - a titmouse is constantly looking around, fly up to the feeder, quickly took a seed and flew up to other branch to eat its prey. However, some of birds, like thrushes prefer to take food from the ground, so for them I scatter sunflower seeds directly on the snow. It delights me to help my small singers, besides I can see then closer now. And when we finally past through this hard times, they will delight me even more with their beautiful songs.

There is no bad weather
Weather forecasters are telling us that Tuesday is meeting us with a strong frost. To the morning at the weather station of Kaliningrad the air is cooled down to -15C. Really? I met this morning by a swimming in the sea. Usually I didn’t swim when the temperature is below -3-5C, however now we got for a long time temperatures much lower. Besides, it’s a pity to lose such a beautiful morning with so clear sky without wind and with completely calm sea. Near the sea temperatures are often a bit warmer, because of the sea. I don’t know exactly what the temperature was there this morning, but I noticed that it actually doesn’t mean much, as the temperature of water anyway is upper zero and you can’t freeze more than it’s possible. So I really didn’t freeze more than usual and was able to warm up myself quite fast. However, there is another problem then just cold came with the frost - formation of coastal ice -fast ice. Even the non-freezing Baltic sea has reacted to the cool temperatures. Somewhere, especially in small bays fast ice is reached several meters, in some places also ice pancakes are floating. In the place where I’m swimming it is not yet so wide, so I carefully can step over the fast ice. Anyway it’s very untypical pictures in the reality of our climate today. The weather and landscapes now are so winter like, the sky is so unbelievable blue and the sun is so shining, that it didn’t stop to amaze me. I’m still waiting for warmth, but now I’m a bit calm down and try to accept such cold winter and enjoy it as much as I can. As they often say in Russia ”There is no bad weather”. And what could say people whose weather leaves much to be desired for at least half a year... I wish you that the weather always delights you and all the best!

On the19th January in Russia is celebrated the church holiday Baptism of the Lord (Epiphany). In this period is also often happen especially strong frosts which got its name by the church holiday - Epiphany frosts. Usually our winters are much warmer than in most part of the country and frosts pass us by. However, not this year. The baric giant which is Siberian anticyclone united the huge territory under its power from the Far East to Central Europe. Our temperatures remains steadily below zero and it’s going to become even worse. There is no light at the end of the tunnel for at least the next two weeks. So the Epiphany frosts have come to us for a long. On the night from 18th to 19th January and during the day of 19th we have a tradition to dive into an ice hole. A hole is cutting in the ice, convenient slopes are being equipped and the water is consecrating by a priest. The ice hole is often has the shape of a cross and called Jordan, by the name of the river where Christ was baptized. Actually it isn’t a church ritual and most priest are against it, however people like this tradition. It’s rather an amusement, which sometimes leads to tragedies, as people often are doing it under the alcohol. Actually I also used to dive into the ice hole on the Epiphany. However, now I transformed this fun into a conscious activity of winter swimming. It gives me a good mood and strong health in the regular manner instead of being desperate fun.

A real winter
A real winter has come to us by the New Year’s holidays. It has come and it seems firmly established itself. A real winter which we usually don’t have in our region. A real one - cold and covering all around with a white blanket. We’ve got a lot of snow, the temperatures are below zero even during the day and at nights it’s at all are often quite frosty. Yes, our sky now is untypical clear and blue, it’s certainly great, however the temperatures below zero bring me a lot of problems. Even if I won’t take into account that cold and snow are uncomfortable for most of my activities, they increase my expenses on electricity and firewoods, it’s also difficult to move by my bike now, and the water in my country house has freezed and now I forced to get it from snow. From snow! Do you know how much of water you can get from a ten-liter bucketing? When the snow finally melt, there will be just a bit of water on the bottom, just a few millilitres out of 10 liters of snow! All because that snow is consists of 95 % of air. Snow looks so white and clear, that it could seems that the water also will be good and clear. This is absolutely not true. Even while the snow is falling, it’s already collecting dust and harmful substances from the atmosphere. And while it’s lying it also get nothing good. There can be bacteria and microbes, chemicals and even radioactive substances. So, snow is natural absorbent and can be used only for technical purposes. Perhaps the need to remove snow is its most harmless consequence for me. It’s always pleasant to work a bit outdoors, under the blue sky and the scant rays of the winter sun. It seems I’ve never seen so much of snow here. The waypaths in my garden now look almost like tonnels - both side of it snowdrifts rise. I can’t imagine how long it’s going to melt and when finally all will return to its circle. For now forecasts aren’t promise to us nothing good. So all can I do is to hope that the climatic winter will leave us at least earlier than the calendar one comes, although better it happens as soon as possible.

The morning of the first day of the year is the most empty and quiet during the whole year in my country. Most of Russians are awakening up not early that in midday and this card represents their 1st January very well, as most usually drunk too much... For those who are able to eat, as breakfast, lunch and dinner are serves their last year’s salads. This joke (about last year’s salads) is the most popular on the 1st January. For the New Year people cook so much food, that they could eat it almost during their all long holidays. Although some food is spoils and throwns away. People rather will throw away excessive, than have a lack of something. For those who can’t eat this day, the best nectars are cucumber brine and mineral water. In general the first January passes under the auspices of lazy lying in front of the TV, eating and drunking again. For some, in this vein passes the whole 10 days. Although usually people visit friends and relatives, walking, buying up tickets to all available events and entertainments, thereby creating crowds and price increases everywhere. This time the snow for the New Year got almost the whole country. It snowed not only in my region, but even in our subtropic - in Sochi and Crimea. These one are especially lucky this year, they got snow exactly on the New Year and a couple of days later it will melt under the +15C, while we got this ”wonder” for uncertainly a long time. On the New Year night we got a real frost - the temperature fall down in some places of the region to a record -18C, which for us is very cold and untypical. However, today we are returning to a slight plus and another portion of snow storm from our conveyor, which is the Baltic Sea.

The snow effect of the Baltic sea is in its strength now. We’ve been literally covering with snow. Strong winds are blowing snow flakes which are generated by the relatively warm sea. Reading carefully weather news I was expecting that the weather is going to turned bad. So despite the strong Northwest wind yesterday I enjoyed a bike riding along the sea. And today my iron horse is out of work, locked in its stable just the same as I’m. Taking into account my yesterday’s pleasant journey, I don’t mind being close at home by this unflying weather today. It happens quite seldom, that I spend the whole day at home, however, today is exactly such day. I’m sitting in my quiet harbor looking through my big panoramic windows as the wind and snow are roughhouse and how fast on the sky are flying powerful cumulus clouds. Actually it’s very cozy and comfortable to be at home in such weather. My favourite book is in my hands, I’m reading ”Walden” for the third time in the last year. In my house isn’t hot, but I really like it and besides I compensate this imaginary inconvenience by hot beverages. And also, when the weather is such non-flying I’m often baking pancakes - thin hot suns are my favourite thing this time. I eat them right from the frying pan, while they are hot... Tomorrow I will have to leave my snowy chalet and head into the city, to meet a New Year with my boyfriend. However, I still have some time to enjoy before I’ll have to look for my snowshoes for the journey.

Outside my window the boreal wind is raging and the noisy Zephyr is echoes him. Strong winds have settled firmly with us - they’ve been rowdied and drove waves, depriving me of my morning swimming for more than a week now and they aren’t going to calm down in the foreseeable future. Winds blow at the level of storm values, time to time dying a bit, but then high up with a new strength. I was in the city for a couple of days, the wind is strong there too, but on the coast it’s incomparable heavier. The wind is also driving clouds, clearing the sky at times, giving beautiful pictures. By the way, the wind gave me a ride too. I decided to cycle while the weather still allows. The wind picked me up and we flow fast. I was gone with the wind, as heroes of M.Mitchell. However return back wasn’t easier than for them too... To the addition towards wind tonight the temperature is going to fall down and the convective precipitation will be covering us with snow. This year we are going to get snow in New Year, probably a lot of it. It will be the first time for the last 20 years when Kaliningrad will get snow in the New Year. Usually our New Year is ”decorated” only with dirt. There can be snow some days before or after the New Year, but only not in the day X. So I’ve already stopped waiting for it. However, as always it happens you just need to stop waiting to get desired, although rather it’s already undesired. Anyway, have a snowy (or not) but Happy New Year!

To the last days of December Russian refrigerators started to break down with foods. There are everything inside it, but nothing can be eat - ”Don’t touch, it’s for the New Year”. We’ve got used to this phrase from childhood. And on the 31 of December, when the main dishes are cooking it is at all almost became a fasting. There are a lot of food, but it’s still ”... it’s for the New Year”, so you stay hungry. It seems that by this hunger strike your appetite should rises up to the skies, that when the evening with that mistery New Year finally will come, you could eat without stopping until morning. Isn’t it silly? What for this overeating, isn’t it be better to eat a bit during the day and feel comfortable, instead of this ”Out of the frying pan into the fire”. But this type of life is in general characteristic to Russians. They can work hard, without weekends, sleep a little, eat bad, limit yourself, all for that then to go into spree or have expensive vacation... After the midnight when all have already ate and drunk enough comes the time for other amusement - fireworks. A couple of weeks before New Year all around appears booths which are selling all kinds of pyrotechnics, that to the main night of the year, people were ready to blow up in the sky their millions. The incessant shooting continues until 1-2 am, then became a bit less, and to 3 am almost dies down - curtain, people fed up not only themselves, but the sky too. And after such ”generosity”, when the holidays and money are finishing, comes the time for ”buckwheat and water”. Happy New Year, ho-ho!
